The Bulls have followed the plan to a "T". From basically being a laughingstock of the NBA, they built a team that was challenging, then to a playoff contender, and now are on the brink of the Eastern Conference cusp. But with so many other teams doing the plan in fast forward, what does this mean to the Bulls?
With all their young established players receiving new contracts with lots more moolah, Chicago pretty dormant during the off season, made the majority of their roster tweaks in the draft, and at the same time grabbing Joe Smith. The starting lineup is set at most positions with Kirk Hinrich at point guard, Ben Gordon at the two, Ben Wallace at center and Luol Deng at the three. Power Forward is still up for grabs, with Smith expected to get the first shot there, meanwhile Tyrus Thomas, Andres Nocioni and Joakim Noah are all expected to challenge for PT. Chicago is as deep as they come with a talented bench, but it will be a challenge for Coach Scott Skiles to find a regular rotation, so expect some mixing and matching early on until he finds the right blend.
The talent is there--the experience is there--the hunger is there. But will it be enough? The Pistons have continued their success, Miami made some decent moves to improve themselves over the season, and the Cavs still look like a juggernaut for years to come. Oh, and don't forget the Celtics--not that you can--as many are prognosticating a ring for them (at least an Eastern conference one). The Bulls will definitely be exciting, but my feeling is that Bulls fans are not so "happy to be here" and are wanting a swifter return to the MJ glory days. Will they get it? Stay tuned.
