Bibby to Hawks: The Fallout

bibby.jpg

It's official--the Sacramento Kings are in full rebuild mode. In a multi-player deal with Atlanta, the Kings sent veteran guard Mike Bibby to the Hawks for four players, three of which have expired contracts at the end of this season. The obvious intent was to have salary cap money cleared and, combined with a more-than-likely high draft pick, will allow the Kings to have a new-look team that may be able to make more of an impact in 2008-09.

While the move for Bibby to be shipped from the Kings was not a surprise, the fact that he is going to the Hawks is actually a little bit of a head-scratcher. For one, the Hawks are 21-28 and in ninth in the East, which is like being the NIT champion. Another is that it's obvious that the team has not had much patience with draft pick Acie Law, who has been less-than-stellar, averaging a little over 4 points a game and shooting an awful 16% from the arc and 37% overall.

So, that being said, it will be interesting to see if Bibby does really help the Hawks reach the playoffs, and by doing so, what that will mean for Law's future with the team, if they just wanted Bibby for a short-term gain and continue to try to cultivate Law, or if they'll aggressively sign Bibby and ship Law for greener pastures and free up some cap room as well.
