Bona-fide playoff contender: Philadelphia

dalemduncan.jpg

Alright, alright, the Eastern Conference is not exactly anything to write home about or, well, even blog about :)

But in the case of the Philadelphia 76ers, it's time. A team once left for dead, the team is now one game under .500, and in the East, that usually puts you about mid-pack. But when you consider that in the last two games they upended a decent Bulls team and then walloped the defending champs San Antonio Spurs at home, this team is not one that has just hang around--they have some legitimate threats.

When the Nuggets traded the Sixers for Allen Iverson, they dealt Andre Miller to Philly, and everyone knew he was a good player, but he has really turned it on overall for them. Against the Spurs, Miller scorched them for 32 points and is now averaging over 17 a game. Andre Iguodala has always been the team leader and continues to play strongly.

While other teams have just kind of idled and await for the playoffs, the Sixers are building the momentum and could be a real threat to the bigger teams--while they may not have the firepower the Celtics have, I believe they will make a lot of noise come late April.
