It's usually not a surprise for teams to get rid of players that aren't performing very well. Usually this is done pretty unceremoniously, a piece of paperwork and a blurb in the transactions section of the newspaper. But an article caught my eye tonight--where Sam Cassell had been waived by the Los Angeles Clippers. Cassell has played 15 seasons in the NBA and has often been an enigmatic leader for whichever team he has lead.
But this season was different; playing in only 38 games and continuing to be slowed by injuries, Cassell's numbers weren't awful. He averaged almost 13 points and 5 assists, not exactly waiver wire material. So, the question is, with these still-productive statistics, will he be grabbed by a team as a backup guard for a playoff run?
My guess is--yes. Actually, a team like the Los Angeles Lakers or even the Utah Jazz could use Cassell for his experience and their young guards. Likewise, a team like the Celtics could use him as well (they seem to be picking up all the oldies but goodies). What is one team's castoff will be someone else's jewel.
