Did the Nets get a steal in Harris?

devinharris.jpg

Yeah, yeah, we know, Jason Kidd is Mr. Everything, blah blah blah. He's a future hall of famer and the Mavericks will get some one who can lead them to a title right now. Great.

But--I understand that the ideology in any sport is--WIN NOW! AT ANY COST! But perhaps the New Jersey Nets will be singing sweet music in a few years with this deal. Why? Sure, they got like three-quarters of the Mavericks team in the deal, but the most notable is Devin Harris. Young and still developing in the NBA, he is currently averaging just under 15 a game and 5 assists. Not super spectacular numbers, but when you consider the already talent-rich Mavericks, now that he is going to a team where he can maybe score a little more and mature that much quicker, you could see an emergence into one of the better guards in the NBA, much like a Kevin Martin or Mike Dunleavy.

Still, you can't underestimate the power of Kidd. He is truly a player that makes guys around him that much better, and with a return to the team that he played for previously--that is a proven winner--it can only be a great thing for the Mavericks. I know many will say that this is a largely sided deal with the Mavs getting the much better end of the deal--now--but I believe in the long run both teams will prosper.
