Dirk done for one

stg_070503_nowitzki_spft_10p.hmedium.jpg

After a huge hit on Andrei Kirilenko that kept him sprawled on the floor for several minutes, Dirk Nowitzki was given a "flagrant 1" foul, which meant the normal two free throws and the ball. However, the NBA reviews all flagrant fouls, and when this one was looked at, the powers that be decided that it should be a flagrant 2 foul, which would have normally been an automatic ejection and suspension.

Well, at least the suspension will happen. I know that Nowitzki is not your typical thuggish-ruggish type of player and he certainly doesn't have any type of bad blood with Kirilenko, but I still have a hard time understanding when I reviewed this play why in the bloody hell he wasn't tossed? This was nowhere near a normal hard foul, and the fact that AK-47 was down for so long was not because he's some kind of wuss.

He didn't even stay in the game after his free throws--he even had to have X-rays taken. Now you tell me--is that an indication of what should have been an ejection or not? Watch the play for yourself and weigh in. The Mavericks will only miss Dirk for one game, but it is against the red-hot Rockets, so I guess there's some justice....
