Don't pass the OJ: Mayo declares for draft

oj-mayo-profile.gif

So, OJ Mayo is going to the NBA. Like Eric Gordon's announcement earlier, Mayo going to the pros was really no surprise. One of the most hyped freshmen and biggest high school players last year, Mayo almost single-handedly carried the USC Trojans this year, averaging 20.7 points and 4.5 rebounds, and he set freshman school records for points in a season (684) and three-pointers (88).

While Mayo isn't really thought to go super high, he should go at least in the lottery range. At 6-4, that will go against him in terms of the guards in the NBA, but he certainly has the maturity--even as a freshman--to make the jump successfully. He handled fame very well, and he was able to really fend off teams double and triple teaming him; sure, he made mistakes, and sure, he'll continue to make them, but this is one of those no-brainers--going to the NBA is the choice now.

Some will argue that because his projection in the lottery isn't that high that staying in the NCAA could make him millions in the long run, but I will argue with them that just because his projection is low now, I can almost bet that this guy is going to go to a few pre-draft camps, and he will rise. He has the head, he has the game, and he has the NBA body. He will make the team that gets him very happy.
