Game #1000 for Raptors

Honestly, who woulda thunk it?

For years, the NBA had only US teams and was a US game. But the day the Toronto Blue Jays won the world series in 1992, a bid was made to the NBA for a team in Toronto. And the rest, they say, is history. Now here we are as the Raptors are getting ready for their 1000th game, and the prospects of the franchise continue to be at a level which is--well--frankly not really what fans would like--but better than a lot of other franchises.

The Raptors have yet to make a ton of noise in the playoffs and infiltrate "the big" teams. While they have budding superstars, it seems every playoff year the team suddenly turns into underachievers. Is this their fault, or is it more of the fans fault, as the atmosphere is not comparable to other venues of rabid fanatics like Boston Garden, United Airways Arena, The Palace, or even the O-rena. Perhaps this is a case where the subtle nuances of professional basketball still haven't quite made their way into the Canadian culture overall, perhaps.

But I would like to think that the loss of the Montreal Expos in baseball is still very much on people's minds, and the fact that the small market franchise in baseball lead to its demise--and also to consider that they lost a ton of talent along the way--and much of this was in due part because of the lack of support.

So, it is one thing and a great accomplishment to think a little dream 14 years ago would 16 years later the team was playing its 1000th game, but now it's time to move things to the next level, Toronto.
