Garnett Garnishes Defensive Award

Didja like that little play on words? Well didja? That's how I roll. (I really don't know what that means, but it sounds good).

Kevin Garnett
came to Boston with just one goal in mind: win a championship. In joining perennial all-star Paul Pierce and cagey veteran Ray Allen, Garnett had to have felt that coming home in the summer of 2008 could be a lot easier as he flashed a new championship ring to fellow friends and family. But what he didn't set out to do was dominate defensively--but that's just what he did.

Garnett was awarded the 2007-2008 Kia Defensive Player of the Year Award, basically dominating the voting just like he did on the court; second place finisher Marcus Camby wasn't even within 200 points him in the final vote tabulation. Garnett lead the Celtics with almost 10 boards a game, 1.2 blocks, and 1.4 steals to go along with that. Not too shabby for a guy that is 6'11".

One of Garnett's best defensive performances of the season was recording 7 blocks against the Chicago Bulls. Was it the highlight of his year? Not even close. Considering the turnaround that Boston has made--which is the best in NBA history at +42 for the year, Garnett not only has a legitimate stake on this award, but could be the NBA MVP as well--even though most people are debating between Kobe Bryant and Chris Paul.

Regardless, this award is very prestigious and well-deserved. Congrats, KG!
