Grizzlies continue fire sale with Swift trade

sswift.jpg

Giving away Pau Gasol was a big deal. Letting Damon Stoudamire go to the Spurs really wasn't. But now with the trade of Stromile Swift to the Nets for Jason Collins, the Grizzlies are making it clear: they are not rebuilding, they are putting up the "everything must go" sign.

Sure, they have some talented youngsters, but good gravy, how do you expect for these guys to get better when they have no one else to rely upon--trial by fire is not always the best option. I understand salary cap, strategic positioning, blah blah blah....But giving up Swift, who really could have exploded with Gasol gone now and Mike Conley coming into his own, was waving the biggest white flag they could find.

Getting Collins won't really do them any favors; sure, he may close statistically to Swift in some of the big categories, but he doesn't bring the presence that Swift did--I know, I know, it's not as if Stromile is some much-sought after All-Star, but I just cringed when I read this. Just like Cub fans, "wait til next year", I guess. Wait a minute...Cubs...Grizzlies....aha! It all makes sense now.
