G, Raymond Felton - Charlotte Bobcats
While still a drain on field goal percentage (38.4), Felton has been one of basketball’s most proficient passers since Brevin Knight went down. After a slow first month to the season, Felton has averaged 9.2 assists over the last 20 games. In fact, over the last 11 games, Felton has averaged 11.4 helpers per contest. He’s hitting 1.8 3-pointers per game during January and is coming off a month that saw him get 1.7 steals per game. With no other viable point guard option in Charlotte, Felton is getting 38 minutes of burn each night, and he’s making the most of it. No sophomore slump here, and even when Knight returns to the lineup, Felton is going to continue putting up nice numbers, as he’s clearly a future star in the league.
C, Brad Miller - Sacremento Kings
First it was a foot injury derailing the start of Miller’s season, but lately, it’s been poor play. Miller has reached double-digits in rebounds just twice this year and has seen his numbers decrease across the board. Miller is having his worst statistical season in every measurable category since coming to Sacramento four years ago. After getting 37 minutes per game over the last two seasons, a big reason for his decline this year has been his lack of court time (26 minutes per game). Miller is rejecting just 0.4 shots per game this year, which is truly pathetic for a center. Still, a recent flu bug suppressed his January numbers, and one has to think he can only go up from here.
C, Marcus Camby - Denver Nuggets
No one is a hotter rebounder in the league right now. Camby has double figures in boards in each of his last seven contests, averaging a remarkable 15.6 during that span. He’s also recorded seven blocks in four out of his last eight games played. In the month of January, Camby is getting 16.6 rebounds per game, while swatting 3.2 shots per contest as well. The 3.0 assists per game is also a very high number for a center. Injuries will always be a concern when it comes to Camby, but there’s no denying the fact that when he’s on the floor, he’s a fantasy force.
G, Rafer Alston - Houston Rockets
Just a career 38.4 percent shooter, Alston has taken that ineptitude to a new low recently. Over the last eight games, Alston is shooting a paltry 29 percent (38-of-131). For a point guard, he also struggles at the line (72.5 percent). He has hit a 3-pointer in 16 straight contests and is a help in the steals category, but the drain in shooting that comes with it is almost irreparable. Alston hasn’t shot better than 43 percent from the field during a game since December 17, a span of 13 games.
G, Earl Watson - Seattle Supersonics
Since taking over starting point guard duties from Luke Ridnour, Watson has been an assists machine, averaging 11.6 dimes over the last five games. In the nine tilts he’s gotten the starting nod this season, Watson is getting 7.8 assists per game. While it’s no sure thing Ridnour won’t reenter the starting lineup at some point, Watson’s far superior defense means he’s likely to see significant playing time either way. Admittedly, Watson’s shooting has been dreadful this year (34.8 percent), but if you need help in the assists department, he’s an excellent target right now, as he should still come relatively cheap.
C, Andrew Bogut - Milwaukee Bucks
During the first month of his sophomore campaign, Bogut’s numbers were similar to his rookie season. Over the last month, however, something has clicked with the former No. 1 overall pick, especially in the rebounding department. He’s reached double figures in boards in nine out of the last 11 games, averaging 11.8 over that span. During January, Bogut is getting 13.6 rpg, 3.0 apg and 1.6 spg – including a monster 20-20 game Friday, which saw him haul in a career-high 24 rebounds. Bogut also might already be the best passing big man in the game, reflected by his impressive 3.1 assists per game. If there was any question as to whether he’d be a future star in the league, he’s answered that with a resounding yes over the last four weeks.
