Houston, we have a problem: Vet unlikely to come back with Nets

The movement this summer for the NBA's theme has had a "renaissance" feel to it, whereby several veteran players have been discussed or even joined teams. Allan Houston has been the central figure in many of these discussions, and the New Jersey Nets took a hard look at him.

The Nets were one of the teams that invited Houston to try out for them before training camp started on Oct. 2, but after Marcus Williams broke his foot, the Nets had to fill a need at backup point guard, which they did by signing veteran Darrell Armstrong. They then withdrew their offer to Houston.

With Jason Kidd (strained back) and Armstrong (sprained ankle) nursing injuries, the Nets may need to carry an additional point guard until Williams gets back toward the middle of next month. Guards Eddie Gill, Mateen Cleaves and Robert Hite also are competing for spots on the roster.

So I guess what it comes down to is this--The Nets needs somebody, just not Houston. Too bad for all the hype that this is created and the buzz in New York-New Jersey.
