Well, Kobe Bryant wanted a new supporting cast--the Lakers are starting to give him one. Just a couple of days after the major suitor for Bryant, the Bulls, declared they were no longer going after him, the Lakers dealt Brian Cook and Maurice Evans to Orlando for Trevor Ariza.
It is not a blockbuster deal by any means, but Ariza is known for his defense and fits nicely into Phil Jackson's philosophy. Cook and Evans give the Magic more depth and experience in what seems to be a pretty special season shaping up for them. Cook will probably see a bit more minutes to start, but Evans is currently averaging more points per game.
In making this move, the Magic also waived Bo Outlaw, a longtime vet of the NBA who has always been a fan favorite in Orlando. While the deal is not ground-shaking, it shows that 1) The Lakers are starting to retool and 2) the Magic are already playing the long-term playoff chess game.
