Sure, there were several players involved in the mass swap between Memphis and the Lakers. But no one will deny that the biggest coup of the deal was the Lakers getting Pau Gasol, the versatile seven-footer who should really make a huge impact with LaLa Land's favorite team.
After Andrew Bynum went down a few weeks ago, many thought the only way the Lakers were going to continue their surge and carry it over into the postseason would be if Kobe Bryant turned up his game yet again, as the frontcourt was basically...well, nothing. But now with Gasol, they have an inside-outside presence that every team will have to defend at all times, which should really open up the court for even more possibility with the Lakers.
The move not only did the Lakers wonders and better possibilities, it also threw a loud signal to the rest of the West: The Lakers are here to play. And with the "Zen Master" Phil Jackson at the helm, you can bet he'll have Gasol running the triangle in his sleep before too long.
