When someone takes a little time off, it is generally for rest and relaxation. Unfortunately in professional sports, taking time off usually means something not good; for Sam Mitchell, it is because his wife's father passed away in Atlanta. In his absence, assistant coach Mike Evans will run the team. After some research by Sportsnet, it is thought that with Evans taking over the team, he will be the first Canadian-born coach in the NBA, albeit an interim coach.
Mitchell had not missed a game in almost 4 years as a head coach. The Raptors management team has said that Mitchell will not be back with the team until after the All-Star break. Evidently Evans and Mitchell have very similar coaching styles, so hopefully this will not make a difference in the team's chemistry.
Regardless, our thoughts go out to Sam Mitchell and his family in this sad time.
