It seems like every year the University of North Carolina Tar Heels have someone special in the draft. Their long line of talent reaches back to Michael Jordan, Jerry Stackhouse, Vince Carter, Raymond Felton, Rasheed Wallace, Brad Daugherty, the list goes on and on...
And this year, Brandan Wright could join that crowd. A prototypical power forward, Wright embodies all that NBA GMs covet in a "4". With a wingspan that would make even Manute Bol go "Wow!", Wright's athletic ability led him to average nearly 15 points a game and 6 boards with a team that featured Tyler Hansbrough and Reyshawn Terry. While Hansbrough got everyone's attention, Wright's consistency game in and game out has brought him a lot of attention during the draft workouts.
But, there are some definite chinks in the armor that could have Wright sliding up and down the lottery scale, dependent upon a team's needs and who goes where when (of course, that could be said for pretty much anybody, right?) Shooting a paltry 56% from the charity stripe is appalling, and outside of the 12-15 foot range, his jump shot is awkward and kind of--well, jank is a good word for it. His intensity has also been questioned, but I don't think that's fair considering he had such an emotional leader as Hansbrough on his team to begin with anyways.
Still, the fact that many say that Wright is very moldable and has one of the prettiest hook shots around, an art that has been virtually non-existent since back in the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar days. With his size and physical presence, this could be the difference in his draft selection.
