NBA Draft Preview: Julian Wright

So, Julian, you think you're ready? Naysayers have said, "this kid can't shoot outside of the paint" and "For being 6'8", bench pressing 185 is pretty darn weak when you'll have the likes of Shaq cavorting around you all night" and even "wow, those 3 and 4 players are going to get a bunch of steals on you".

So then--why is Julian Wright a projected lottery pick? Those things above seem to be something that college coaches would be prickly about when selecting a recruit, much less an NBA prospect. Well, it's all about heart, and Wright certainly shows that game in and game out. You think he's weak? Tell me how then he averaged almost 8 a game for the Kansas Jayhawks in the rough and tumble Big 12? Say his ballhandling skills are suspect? The kid played point guard in high school, so next question please. Can't shoot? Let's put it this way--if there is a player that I can forecast to be the most improved over the next 3 years, it's Wright. His gymrat attitude and outstanding outlook on things have shown in his ability to move his game to the next level in college ball.

So, the question is, what will GMs see? A project that has more risk than reward? Or a future star? My guess is he'll go around 8-12. The questions are a little much for a top 5 or even top 6 or 7 pick, in my opinion. But rest assured--whoever gets him will have their work cut out for them, but it WILL pay off.
