NBA Draft Preview: Kevin Durant

Not enough O's in smooooooooth. Silky. Like a dream come true.

There aren't enough cliches to place upon Kevin Durant's shoulders, but one statement is rock solid--the kid can play. Leading a not-so-great Texas Longhorn team throughout the year, Durant sizzled and slashed his way to many player of the year categories, averaging nearly 26 points a game, 11 boards, almost 2 steals and 2 blocks a game. Not bad.

Yeah--not bad even for Kobe Bryant numbers, or Lebron James. His Scottie Pippen type of game has left many opponents gaping as he has not only put up the scoring numbers, but also using his 6'9" frame to defend just as well. Although Texas got manhandled by USC in his final collegiate game, no one doubts Durant's ability to take over a game, a la Michael Jordan.

Problems still lie though with the fact that he kind of fits a size and mold of many other NBA players, which is really the only reason why Greg Oden will be taken before him in the draft. Any other day, this kid is a golden ticket. It will be interesting to see how Durant faces up against many of the ballhawks in the NBA (Yes, they do play defense from time to time, even in Phoenix), because Durant's ballhandling has always been a little suspect. But give the kid time--he may not be the sensation Lebron was, but he could end up being another Magic Johnson, if given the right team and right coach.
