NBA Draft Preview: Mike Conley Jr.

So which came first, the chicken or the egg? As many have pondered this questions for eons, it can be paralleled when it comes to Mike Conley Jr.'s past and future. We all know the guy can play, we know that he's broken several opponents ankles on the way to the rim, we know he has the personality to charm a woman with white gloves to buy a ketchup popsicle. But--what about Conley without Oden? How will that really be?

Conley has the slasher mentality, the Steve Nash-like ability to get into small spaces and either make tough shots or dish the ball for a high-percentage shot. What he hasn't got is a solid jumper that can keep defenses honest--and that could spell a little trouble for the former Ohio St. star until he develops more consistency for the longer bombs. That, combined with a smaller stature (6'1"), may again allow for stronger, bigger guards to block Conley's way to the hole. Until he can shore up the mid-range to long ball net-ticklers, he will be still learning the NBA game.

But don't underestimate the kid. If there is someone in the game that has the savvy and work ethic, it's Conley. It's been drilled into him by his famous legacy, Mike Conley Sr., of track and field fame. Conley has been projected as high as third (who hasn't?) and he may be a role player for a couple of years, but mark my word, he'll get his time, and then there may be people going "Steve who?"
