NBA Draft Preview: Spencer Hawes

Greg Oden brings a certain knack to the table--the ability to be a one-man team if needed. Joakim Noah and Al Horford bring experience and a winning tradition. So, with all of these big men in the draft, where does that leave a player like Spencer Hawes?

Hawes, who played for the Washington Huskies, has got mad game. Offensively, this guy can shoot, create, and basically play that end of the floor right now with some of the big names of the NBA. (Yes, you heard it here first...or maybe not..but that's just me trying to be dramatic). His shooting percentage was over 53%, and having a 75% free throw percentage for a 7-footer is something to really take into consideration.

The biggest knock on Hawes is his toughness on the defensive end and his ability to scrap down under. He only averaged 6 boards a game, and for a guy of his size, that raises a lot of eyebrows. If he wants to immediately contribute to a team, he's going to have to develop that part of his game--quickly, or else he will be benched for any team that drafts him.

Experts have Hawes in the top ten, and that is a compliment considering the amount of big men in the draft. I only see that happening if there is a team within that realm that desperately needs interior help and the other three have vanished from the board. Other than that, I can see because of that huge question mark defensively that Hawes won't go before number 15.
