We always like to predict things, don't we? From picking the next winner on Survivor to what the next play will be in a sport to even diagnosing when weather will hit, we as humans have this craving for always trying to "know" what is around the next corner. And with the NBA, while predictions are sometimes dead on, some are way off the mark (just look at the last several NBA drafts and that should tell you something).
When it comes to the NBA general managers, when polled, 37% of the owners felt the Spurs would win it all again--but they picked the Mavs to win the division the Spurs are in (ain't this a crazy world!). When it came to picking individual things, Dirk Nowitzki, the reigning MVP, wasn't at the top of the list. At first glance, you may think "Well, they probably think Nash will win it again" or "whereever Kobe ends up, he's going to get it" or possibly even "Garnett's change of scenery will push his game to the MVP level". While you are possibly right--the GMs think that it's about time the King steps forward--that of Lebron James. And this was no surprise--in the question as to which player the GMs would want to build a franchise around, almost 60% said James.
Wow.
My gut is that the comparisons to Michael Jordan are starting to become very eerily similar--it took a few years for Jordan to really garner the ultimate respect, but when he hit that jumper against Cleveland at the buzzer (you know--the one where he pumps his fist like a thousand times and Craig Ehlo is about as dejected as a kid who has gotten a PS3 stolen from him), the world took attention finally, and the Bulls took off. This is almost the same scenario as James, who's awesome effort against the Pistons propelled the Cavs to the finals. We may just be seeing a dynasty form--but, again, according to the GMs, the dynasty isn't in Cleveland, it's in San Antonio, and perhaps rightfully so. I still think that Nowitzki is hungrier than ever and will repeat in the MVP and that the Suns or the Celtics take the trophy home this year. Call it another gut feeling (although that gut ate way too much Taco Bell last night, so that goes for saying).
It's why I love the NBA--parity, partying, and pretty awesome players...
