In light of the increase of flagrant fouls and fights over the past few seasons, the NBA has agreed to allow referees to review these situations to properly assess things that they may have missed during the altercations.
Since it is known as a "Penalty 2" by the NBA, it ruled that instant replay review was appropriate. This is a great thing because as we all know, once the benches clear, usually all hell breaks loose, and while eventually the appropriate people get punished/fined/suspended, during the game that's not so evident. This way the refs can pinpoint them immediately.
Question--you don't think this may be a soft move to help protect the damaged credibility of the NBA referees, do you? It's awfully convenient that this comes almost 1 month after NBA refereed Tim Donaghy was arraigned on the betting charges while he was a referee. While this doesn't exactly ultimately clear the air, I am wondering if eventually there will be more checks and balances for the zebras to restore some dignity back to the professional game overall.
