Theo Ratliff has been in a bunch of big trades and transactions. The problem is, he hasn't been the big name in any of them. With deals that brought Kevin Garnett to Boston, Rasheed Wallace to Detroit, Dikembe Mutumbo to Atlanta, and Jerry Stackhouse to Detroit as well. But even after several teams have used him as leverage, the Pistons once again got him back as a free agent after he asked the Minnesota Timberwolves to buy his contract out.
After the Pistons lost to Chicago a couple of years ago, they've lacked the physical inside presence and shot blocking that Wallace brought, and Ratliff gives them exactly that, and fits the mold of the Pistons--not a lot of flash, but guys that get the job done and are usually great role players.
The biggest issue with Ratliff is certainly injuries, where he's had a bad back and missed a ton of games over the last two seasons. But he's been back for two weeks and has been in the active rotation for the T-Wolves, so if he can stay on the court, this will be a great move for the Pistons.
