Rumor: Chauncey Billups to Bucks?

Billups to the Bucks? I wouldn't hold my breath.

Since Tim is handling the Draft preview, I figure I'd take a look at some of the rumors making the rounds. According to the Milwaukee Journal Times (scroll down a bit) the Bucks are interested again in Chauncey Billups and are preparing to back up the Brinks truck to get him to beautiful Wisconsin. Since the article in the JT the rumor has made its way around local TV and sports talk radio in Detroit, and as usual there is a small measure of panic and misinformation. In fact one TV station in Detroit reported that the Bucks could offer Chauncey a "max contract," which as astute NBA fans know is an impossibility since only a player's current team can offer a max contract under the NBA's collective bargaining rules. Just another example of how rumors and innuendo make for interesting reporting.

While there is a possibility of this happening (the Bucks do have enough cap room to make a significant offer), I don't really see it. The Bucks could definitely use a point guard like Chauncey to run the offense and take the pressure off Michael Redd, but Pistons President Joe Dumars has said publicly that re-signing Chauncey is the teams number one priority and I see them getting it done. Chauncey wants to stay in Detroit (unlike Ben Wallace) and the Pistons will pay him enough to stick around. Fun rumor though....

Also just wanted to plug the fact that I'll be liveblogging the entire NBA Draft on Thursday June 28th, so be sure to check that out. It'll be much like the one I did for the NFL Draft and should be a good time for all. Hopefully Stu Scott will be doing the player interviews for ESPN again and drop some street slang on the stunned international players who can barely speak English. Always a good time.
