San Antonio sweeps its way to fourth crown

At the beginning of this season, honestly--who woulda thunk it?

Dallas looked like the team primed to win it all. Phoenix was chomping at the bit to get another shot at the championship with a healthy Amare Stoudemire and two-time MVP Steve Nash. Even some people though Kobe Bryant could lead the Los Angeles Lakers very far. In the east, Detroit stood tall, with the Chicago Bulls and Cleveland Cavaliers looming. Even Toronto got some hype.

But San Antonio?

Come on, no one was going to pick them. They are boring, methodical, too much like the mentality in "Hoosiers" (Four passes before we shoot!), the biggest hype surrounding them was whether Tony Parker and Eva Longoria were going to get hitched, and that was it. No "real" talk of a title. But, just like everything else in this world that's unpredictable, the NBA season ended with San Antonio standing atop the world, with Parker, Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Robert Horry (who won his seventh ring) looking down. They did by doing what they do best--execution.

No slight to Cleveland, but this just wasn't the year. They should be doubly proud of being in the Finals, as no one ever thought they could upend the mighty Pistons. But be on the lookout for a changing of the guard--Cleveland is here to stay, and while the west is an awfully tough conference overall, offseason moves and burgeoning talent pools should give this team a great advantage next year.

Congrats to the Spurs! You earned it!
