Sonics Owner: Open Mouth, Insert $250,000 Foot

The debate has been going on and on for a while now: should the Sonics stay in Seattle? Well, according to co-owner Aubrey McClendon--"Nope". Ok, it was a little bit more than that--he said, "We didn't buy the team to keep it in Seattle; we hoped to come (to Oklahoma City)". And for that off-the-cuff comment, his fine: 250 thousand smackers.

This is the same fine that Mark Cuban had to pay two times in the playoffs, one for yelling at a referee and another for yelling at commisioner David Stern. Is this the same thing? According to the NBA, yes. The biggest deal is that the owners of the Sonics and WNBA's Storm have given a Halloween deadline to a new arena in Seattle. If it's not approved by then, the group has said that they will move it to Oklahoma.

There has been persistent furor in the emerald kingdom surrounding this, and McClendon's comments couldn't have helped. Kudos to the NBA for not allowing some smug white-collar say whatever he wants whenever he wants about a team that has spent four decades in the same city and is beloved. And of course, this will raise the question that even if they do get the arena, will the group put up another road block just to get it to OK? Hmmm....very interesting....
