The Spurs read the writing on the wall. The West was going after big names and they were going after simply, BIG. With the Phoenix Suns getting Shaquille O'Neal and the Lakers getting Pau Gasol, the Spurs already have Tim Duncan, but with forward vision, they are assuming that might not be enough come the postseason.
They didn't go out and get a big kahuna by any means, but getting Kurt Thomas from the Sonics will give them the size they need to complement Duncan, and it also allows them to drop under the luxury-tax threshold, possibly saving them about $2 million.
Thomas won't be a big scorer, won't grab 20 boards a game, and won't suddenly energize the team--but this is not a team that needs energized; he fits perfectly into the execution that the Spurs lull teams to sleep with, and his professionalism on the court is exactly the personality the Spurs want in every player they have. A good move, and while not a blockbuster, it should help them in the long run.
