Stern comes out from the shadows in betting scandal

Well, you knew it would be true. You just knew deep down that somewhere, sometime, it would happen. There are dirty players who have shaved points in games, coaches that have done questionable things off the court, and now we have added referees into the mix as far as the dark side of sports. Enter the mafia/mob, and you have an almost worse-case scenario.

The question is....how far does the rabbit hole go?

We've identified Tim Donaghy as the culprit, who many say has wagered and been in a state of thousands of dollars worth of losses. So then, if Donaghy has fallen victim to gambling addiction and the lure of fixing games, who else has? My bet (no pun intended) is that there are several others lurking in the shadows that is making a mockery of the game itself. Are we all just victims of puppet masters?

David Stern says that Donaghy is an "isolated issue" and points out that he is the "only referee" that is "alleged" to have done this. As far as publicity and spin doctors go, this case may put the NBA at the place none of us want to go: rock bottom.

Where does the NBA go from here? It's anybody's guess...but it will definitely be darker before the dawn. Stay tuned.
