Suns to play in the sun--outside, that is

outdoorbasketball.jpg

In 1972, The Phoenix Suns played the Milwaukee Bucks in an outdoor preseason in Puerto Rico. Now, they get an encore next preseason against the Denver Nuggets. The game will be played in Indian Wells, California, and will be held in October. This comes on the heels of one of the first ever NHL games to be played outside; I guess they figured if the NHL can play in blistering cold conditions, the NBA should be able to play in the probable blistering hot conditions.

It will be interesting--especially with the up-and-down tempo that the Suns seem to push no matter what the situation--in the outdoors. Also, unlike in the NHL where the conditions outside of just being cold have little to do with the game, there will be the potential problem of wind, which could alter a lot of shots in the process.

You think Shaq will be playing that much? Up and down, up and down, I can just see the big guy with sweat dripping in warmups. Of course, Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson probably won't be much better off after the Suns run them ragged in the California sun. Regardless, venue switches and innovation like this are a great thing for the NBA's publicity. Good luck all!
