Vegas Busts: NBA Summer League "Uglies"

You go from being the heralded savior to a big question mark all in a period of a couple of weeks. How is this possible? Just ask Greg Oden, Corey Brewer, Julian Wright, and Yi Jianlian. At the NBA summer league, they pretty much stunk up the floor, and you can hear the tension in Portland as we speak.

Oden just couldn't keep his hands off anyone--his fouls were atrocious, and he looked lethargic all around. Only a medical issue kept him from embarassing himself any more than he did in the early games. Greg, you better get your stuff together or Portland will ship you out quicker than you can say Sam Bowie.

Brewer was equally sad. He shot a mere 28% from the floor, and while many know that he wasn't drafted for his shooting touch, he threw more bricks up than a mason's convention. Better hit the gym, Corey, and shoot until you can't shoot any more.

Jianlian, to me, is going to be a joke. He had his "cultural" issues in going to Milwaukee already spewed out, and then he proved his concern wasn't even something to consider when he couldn't back up his play. Sure, he averaged 12 points a game, but he also shot 26% from the floor and turned the ball over nearly 5 times a game. And this is just the summer league...wait until Tim Duncan gets a hold of him. Yikes.

Wright, one of the flashier players in college basketball, didn't do much of anything in the summer league, shooting again a paltry 39% and looking like he was lost most of the time, not really standing out at all. For these bucks, you better be shining like there's no tomorrow.

Too early to call for dissapointments for all of these players? Yes and no. It's got to be a little concerning--at the least.
