Walsh's last role with Pacers: Fall Guy

Walsh_240_desk.jpg

Donnie Walsh has, for the most part, been an icon for the Indiana Pacers for over 20 years. When the team was really going through a rough patch in the mid-80s, Walsh took a job as an assistant with what was supposed to be a short-term assignment to help the team immediately under George Irvine. He wasn't going to stay long--he wanted to be a general manager--but he never thought he would end up with the team in one of the most important roles for over 25 years.

And now--it's over. The Pacers "say" that he is "resigning" and even Walsh has said that he told them at the beginning of the year that this was his last season...but....hmmm...how odd the timing, when owner Herb Simon had said that things had to change and that even Larry Bird didn't know what was happening. Speculation had run rampant that it was either Walsh or Bird, and now this.

Walsh deserves more than this--while there won't be really anything to basically point fingers publicly, it is apparent that Simon chose Bird now that he is basically "the guy". While I like Bird, Walsh made this team into a contender, and yes, for all you haters, he didn't win a championship, but he certainly hasn't embarrassed the team as what has happened under Bird's regime--thus far.
