Warriors not about to lose Ellis

act_monta_ellis.jpg

In a story on CBS Sportsline, it is discussed as to whether the Golden State Warriors will let draft steal Monta Ellis go like they did Gilbert Arenas, when due to salary cap restrictions, they could not offer what the Washington Wizards did in taking away the budding superstar from the bay.

With Ellis, while they got him in the second round as well, don't think that they aren't already fretting that type of move. However, the Warriors are actually protected money-wise this time due to the Arenas issue--it's actually termed the "Gilbert Arenas rule" which allows for teams to offer more than the mid-level exception at the time the Warriors were limited in offering Arenas. Plus, with the three year contract that Ellis signed, they hold full rights and can match any free agency offer--and I really don't think they are going to let this one get away.

Ironically, when the Warriors lost Arenas, they basically had zilch, zero, nothing else. But with Ellis, even if they lost him somehow, they would still have Baron Davis and Stephen Jackson to possibly fall back on; but I don't think they will think in those terms. If Ellis keeps on having the improvement he has undergone in transforming from a role player into a star, this Warriors team will again perk up at the right moment and cut some giants down.
