Wilt Chamberlain has some pretty prolific records: 100 points in a game. Broke the record for scoring and held it for over a decade. Most career rebounds in the NBA. 1205 games without fouling out (that is phenomenal considering the position he played). And now--with all of those things in effect, a grass roots campaign has emerged to try and get Chamberlain on an American symbol of greatness: the stamp.
Chamberlain's supporters have been urging basketball fans to write letters to the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee (I'm not joking). The committee reviews proposals every quarter and passes on their recommendations on to the postmaster general. The earliest Chamberlain could appear on a stamp is 2010.
The cause was started by sports writer Donald Hunt of The Philadelphia Tribune, a century-plus old newspaper that primarily targets the black community. The idea that Hunt has pushed for is to have Chamberlain's stamp released on the date of his 100 point game or during Black History month. Either way, it's a noble cause for an NBA great. Write! Write! Write!
